Survival in the Wild
When fish are scarce, African penguins must keep on swimming.

There are not as many fish in the Benguela Current as there used to be, due in large part to years of unregulated commercial fishing. Food scarcity is a major cause of the ongoing decline of the African penguin population. Adult birds forced to swim farther for a meal are weakened by the effort and less able to provide for chicks.

Research & Conservation
Recognizing a problem is often the first step to a solution.

Studies have shown that in areas where there is limited or no commercial fishing, African penguin colonies have been able to rebound. This suggests the importance of marine sanctuaries as a conservation strategy for the species.
