Would you know a penguin if you saw one? 🐧
Yes, you would. And you might think of it as cute, waddling around on land. But what if you were to see the same bird underwater, speeding through the open ocean? Would you think of it differently? Enter into our world of penguins and see for yourself!

On some islands where African penguins breed, birds can escape the searing sun and wind inside the ramshackle remains of abandoned buildings. This remarkable image — of wild penguins repurposing man-made structures — was a source of inspiration for the architecture of Penguin Coast.

Survival in the Wild
Penguins have been around for a long time, but their survival is not guaranteed.

Penguins have been on the planet for at least 60 million years. Descended from flying birds, they slowly evolved back to the sea, giving up flight in order to swim and dive deeper. Penguins are highly adapted to their aquatic lifestyle, but survival is tough.

As of 2014, 9 of 18 penguin species 🐧 are listed as threatened or endangered by the International Union for Conservation

Maryland Zoo Connection
When it comes to African penguins, The Maryland Zoo is a world-renowned expert.

For decades, The Maryland Zoo has been a leading participant in the African Penguin Species Survival Plan (SSP) coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). We run one of the most successful African penguin breeding programs in the world and we are experts at caring and providing medically for these birds. We work with zoos and aquariums and with international partners to disseminate knowledge and protect and support the species.
