1. Sherrard Clemens Marker
Inscription. Born in 1820, Clemens studied law at Washington College (PA) and was admitted to the bar in 1843, then established a practice in Wheeling. Serving in the U.S. House, 1852-53 and 1857-61, he was a delegate to the Richmond Convention of 1861, where he voted against secession. During the Civil War, he opposed WV statehood. Clemens later moved to Missouri and died there in 1881.
