1. Elizabeth River Marker
Inscription. The Elizabeth River was shown, but not named, on a map drawn in 1585 by John White, a participant in Sir Walter Raleigh’s unsuccessful efforts to establish a colony on Roanoke Island in the North Carolina Outer Banks. In 1608 Captain John Smith and 12 colonists from Jamestown explored the Elizabeth River. The River was named for Princess Elizabeth Stuart (1596-1660), daughter of England’s King James I, for whom the Jamestown Colony was named. As part of a significant natural Harbor, the Elizabeth River was Norfolk’s reason for being. The primary means of transportation in the colonial period was water. Agricultural products from farms and plantations were brought by boat to Norfolk to be shipped abroad, first by sailing vessels and later by steamships. The ships were moored at piers crowding this waterfront, and goods were loaded by hand. With the connection of the Dismal Swamp Canal to the Elizabeth River in the early 1800’s, Norfolk became the main port to serve large areas of North Carolina.
