South Garden

The South Garden is one of the earliest formalized public gardens in the United States. Its basic plan, designed by Frederick Graff in 1829, has been reconstructed. The Marble Fountain, c. 1830, was placed in the center of a series of geometrical paths. The fountain boasted the city's tallest spray of water, created by the pressure of the adjacent Reservoir.
As the Garden matured it became as celebrated as the nearby neoclassical buildings. Visitors strolled past sculpture, memorials, and benches beneath a tall tree canopy. The Engine House reopened as a restaurant in the 1830s as a restaurant in the 1830s. Stairs led down to the Esplanade, built in 1835 along the riverbank below the Garden.
[Captions:]
Prior to 1830 this area was used to store wood for the steam engines. Visitors can be seen along the river's edge before the Esplanade was built.
