Highland Cottage
(Squire House – Mud House)
Highland Cottage was built in 1872
in the High Victorian Gothic style by H.J. Baker, an Ossining resident and industrialist, who employed specially trained workers from England to achieve one of the earliest homes constructed almost entirely of concrete. It was nicknamed the Mud House. The walls were scored to simulate stone. Notable residents included Dr. Amos O. Squire, who served as Chief Physician of Sing Sing Prison from 1910 to 1925. His daughter, Evelyn Squire Culp, was born in the southwest bedroom in 1906 and slept in that same bedroom until her death in 2002. The house was added to the National Register in 1982 and was restored in 1986.
