A Landmark Goes Green
The historic Lion House, originally built in 1903, has been updated to become New York City's first LEED* certified landmark building. The Lion House now uses 57% less energy than a conventional building—and that's good for people, animals, and the environment!

Include Local Materials
We saved energy during the renovation by including materials manufactured and shipped by local businesses.

You Can Save Energy, Too!
Buying locally grown groceries and locally produced goods saves on transportation costs and fuel.

Use Natural Sunlight
Specially-designed skylights help control the amount of natural light and heat entering the building. On hot days, heat reflects off the skylights. On cold days it is absorbed into the building.

The building saves energy and uses fewer lighting fixtures. And the animals get plenty of natural sunlight.

Dig a Geothermal Well
We drilled a well one third of a mile deep to help regulate the building's temperature. Water pumped down the well comes back up at 55°, the Earth's constant temperature, and helps keep the building warm in winter

and cool in summer. This saves up to 70% of conventional heating and cooling costs.

Reuse an Entire Building
By renovating the Lion House, we used less energy, materials, and fuel than if we had built an entirely new structure. Finding a new use for an existing building is recycling in a big way.

You can Help, Too!
Reduce, reuse, recycle whenever possible
