Hopping Along…. . Historical evidence dating back to the scholar Pliny in ancient Rome indicates that hop was used as a kitchen herb for its edible shoots. By the 9th and 10th centuries, the hop plant was widely used in brewing beer in France and Germany. It was introduced to North America in 1629 by the Massachusetts Company and by the mid-17th century had spread to Virginia. By 1800, hops had become an important field crop on the east coast. During the 19th century, its cultivation spread progressively westward. It was used not only in the brewing of beef to help retard spoilage, but also to provide bitterness to balance the sweetness of malt sugars. Hops was also mixed into various herbal remedies of questionable value. It does appear to deserve its reputation as a sedative. Abraham Lincoln and King George III are reported to have used pillows stuffed with dried hops to help them sleep.
