Established in 1836, Laurel Hill was a forerunner of America's rural cemetery movement, promising Philadelphia families a permanent, nonsectarian place of rest in a picturesque setting. Partnering founders, John Jay Smith, Nathan Dunn, Frederick Brown and Benjamin Richards fashioned it into a world-renowned arboretum and tourist attraction. Designer, John Notman, devised a landscape that was not only artful but also the first of its ind. Laurel Hill was America's original garden cemetery. Today, it is the first to be named a National Historic Landmark.
From war heroes to influential politicians and important inventors, from visionary artists to powerful industrialists, Laurel Hill is the final resting place of numerous notables who have shaped the storylines of our city and nation.
Since its founding, Laurel Hill has been as much a site of rest for the dead as that of recreation and retreat for the living. The Cemetery is open daily with free admission for educational and recreational use, and also offers a diverse selection of public programming. Proceeds raised support the preservation and interpretation of the site.
