In 1918, the Fairmount Park Commission hired Jacques Gréber to create a landscape plan for the newly opened Parkway. Gréber set out to bring a slice of the park into the heart of the city.
Where earlier plans had shown a street lined with buildings, he saw a boulevard lined with parks, fountains and statues. His plan included double rows of evenly spaced trees, the pattern you see today.
Many of the original red oaks have been replaced by red maples and sweet gum trees.
Today, Philadelphia continues to discuss the right balance between buildings and open space on the Parkway.
