Budgerigar
Melopsittacus undulatus
Where in the World? Australia
Habitat: Grassland, Woodlands, Scrub
Diet: Seeds, Grains
The budgerigar is the most popular pet bird in the world. Naturally green and yellow, "budgies" have been bred for a wide variety of colors on the pet trade, displaying more variety in color than any other species of bird.
Budgerigars are normally found in small flocks, but will join to form very large ones when food and water are plentiful. When food and water are scarce, they will migrate in search of better conditions.
Budgerigars have become more common in Australia as farming has produced a constant, regular supply of food and water for them. Some farmers, in turn, consider budgies to be pests which raid their crops.
Status in the Wild: Common
