1. Freemasonry at Gettysburg Marker
Inscription.
Mortally wounded during Pickett's Charge, Confederate General Lewis Armistead, a Freemason, received aid and comfort from Union Captain Henry Bingham, a fellow Freemason. Their Freemasonry bond of brotherhood transcended battle lines and symbolized their unbreakable ties. This brotherhood laid the cornerstone of the Soldiers' National Monument in 1865. When the cemetery was closed to new burials in the 1960s, the Freemasons donated funds to purchase additional property. In 1993, improvements to the National Cemetery Annex were made possible through generous Freemason funding. Enhancements included a plaza honoring fallen American soldiers and the "Friend to Friend" Memorial, depicting the Bingham and Armistead battlefield encounter. The cemetery is the final resting place for Union soldiers killed in the Battle of Gettysburg and American veterans from the Civil War through Vietnam.
