Inscription. This grain mill, which was located at the southwest corner of Second & Broadway Streets and considered one of the oldest landmarks in Spencerville, was constructed in 1843 and remained in existence until the early 1940's. The mill eliminated the need for area residents to travel to Piqua to get their grain ground into meal and flour. Two 60-year-old water wheels, one 44 inches in diameter and one 36 inches in diameter, both with wooden spokes, served the mill with power from the Miami and Erie Canal. The mill featured huge hewed timbers, which provided support for the heavy machinery, giving ample evidence of the workmanship of the pioneers of Spencerville.
