The Mayo Memorial. . Twenty-five years after the deaths of the Doctors William James and Charles Horace Mayo the citizens of Rochester fittingly observed the Mayo Centennial Year - 1964 - to commemorate the approximate 100th anniversary of the birth dates of the Doctors Mayo and the 50th year of the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research. Mayo Memorial Park contains in the east end of the mall the statues of Drs. W. J. and C. H. Mayo, co-founders of the Mayo Clinic. James Earle Fraser was the sculptor. The flagpole erected to the south of the mall was the gift of Mr. J. H. Kahler in 1929. It was moved to become a part of Mayo Memorial Park in 1952.
