Inscription. The middle school across 5th Street is named in honor of civil rights leader Ida B. Wells, one of the founders of the NAACP in 1909. Before that, she was a respected investigative journalist, co-owning and writing for the Memphis Free Speech and Headlight in the 1890s.

It's entirely possible that this statue is life-size. She was believed to be no taller than 5'. Additionally, the inscription reads: The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.
