The images reproduced here were selected as being representative of all Delaware women who have served our state and our nation in defense plants in wartime, helping to manufacture products that support our Armed Forces. Each woman pictured on the monument is named here, insofar as her information is known.

Lt. Col. Nancy Harkness Love, 1914 - 1976
Appointed First squadron leader of the first Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS) unit at New Castle Army Air Base on 10 September 1942.

Mary Hodgson, RN
A native of Felton, Delaware, Ms. Hodgson trained as a nurse in Philadelphia. She enlisted as a Red Cross nurse with the 28th Infantry Division and served in France from 1917 to 1919.

Lieutenant Ruth Haddick Dorsman, 1921 - 2016
A registered nurse, Lt. Dorsman proudly served her country in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps as a post-op nurse in 1944 and 1945 in field hospitals near the front lines in Europe.

Sergeant Lisa Mosley, 82nd Airborne in Iraq
Sgt. Mosley grew up in Wilmington.

She served on active duty from 1982-1987, and in the reserves 1987-1990. She served in the 82nd Airborne Division and was called back to active duty in 1991 for the Gulf War. She is a Disabled American Veteran.

A Worker at an aircraft factory in New Castle, Delaware, during World War II seems to be the personification of the 1940's cultural icon, "Rosie the Riveter."

Elizabeth Lawton Cerchio
Betty served as a World War II Navy Hospital Apprentice First Class. Her daughter, Pat Cerchio-Vieria also served in the U.S. Navy, retiring with the rank of commander.

Lieutenant Margaret Ann Shecora Tos
Lt. Tos served as a U.S. Army nurse during the Korean War. She and her husband later settled in Dover, where she served for many years as a school nurse.

Captain Jessica Stephenson, U.S. Army, Afghanistan
Jessica is a graduate of A.I. duPont High School and West Point. She was a highly decorated Apache Helicopter pilot in Afghanistan in 2013 and 2014, where she is seen holding a Delaware

Captain Robin Russell Gibbs, U.S.N.
Capt. Gibbs grew up in Dover and now commands a reserve unit in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. She is shown here while on deployment in Afghanistan in 2012.

The WAF ("Women in the Air Force") was formed in 1948. It lasted until 1976, when women were accepted in the Air Force on an equal basis with men.

U.S. Army Nurses in Vietnam, 1960's
Many Delaware women were among the thousands of young American nurses who volunteered for service in Vietnam. Their invaluable service to our nation, often under the most difficult conditions, stands as an eloquent reminder of the part women played in that war.

Major Linda Morelli of Hockessin
Major Morelli enlisted in the Delaware Air National Guard in 1975 and was named outstanding graduate in basic training. She became the first airborne-qualified female and the first female helicopter pilot from the Delaware National Guard.

She grew up in New Castle and was in

both the Delaware National Guard and in ROTC at the University of Delaware. She trained to become a paratrooper and served in Special Forces and other airborne units. She served in both Iraq and Afghanistan during her 33-year military career.


Sergeant Lydia M. Judge, U.S. Marine Corps
Sgt. Judge, a resident of Harrington, Delaware, enlisted in the Marine Corps in November, 2011. She is now assigned as a loadmaster to Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, NC.
