The Heritage Association 2017 Winona Daughter of The Chief . Daughter of Chief Baw Beese, leader of the Native American Potawatomi Clan, Winona lived in the region of Hillsdale County around the 1830's. Winona's mother was a French pioneer who is believed to have died giving birth to her only child, Winona. "Winona was the replica of her mother and the pride of her father's heart." Reported the Hillsdale Daily News in 1934, reflecting the cherished status of the Hillsdale "Princess" by both the Potawatomi and pioneers alike. The people of Hillsdale fondly remember this beautiful and brave young maiden who lived, worked, and played right here in the hills and dales of Hillsdale County. ,
