Commemorative Dates in the Great Temple
Es probable que los mexicas conmemoraran cada ampliación del Templo Mayor colocando una lápida inscrita con una fecha calendárica. Los arqueólogos han utilizado estas inscripciones para ubicar cronológicamente las etapas constructivas del edificio.
El glifo "4 Caña", que podría equivaler al año 1431 d.C., fue encontrado en el muro de la fachada posterior del templo, que corresponde al gobierno de Itzcoatl.
En el mismo sitio, se localizó el glifo "1 Conejo", equivalente al año 1454 d.C. En esta época gobernaba Moctezuma I.
El glifo "3 Casa" corresponde al año 1469 d.C., fue empotrado en el muro sur, en este año en que subió al poder Axayácatl.
Todas las placas fueron encontradas en el lado del edificio dedicado a Huitzilopochtli.
Commemorative Dates in the Great Temple
It is probable that the Mexicas commemorated each expansion of the Great Temple by laying a commemorative stone inscribed with the calendar date. Archaeologists have used these inscriptions to chronologically identify the constructive stages of the building.
The glyph "4 Cane," which is probably equivalent to the year 1431 A. D., was found on the wall of the rear façade of the temple; this year corresponds to the Itzcoatl government.
In the same place, the "1 Rabbit" glyph was found, equivalent to the year 1454 A. D., when Moctezuma I ruled.
The glyph "3 House" corresponds to the year 1469 A. D. It was embedded in the south wall the same year that Axayácatl came to power.
All the plaques were found on the side of the building dedicated to Huitzilopochtli.
