Castleton Botanical Formal Garden
Castleton Botanical Formal Garden
Castleton Botanical Gardens was established on the 19th of November 1862 as a result of dissatisfaction with the site at Bath, St. Thomas. Castleton Gardens then became one of the greatest gardens of the western hemisphere with its rich variety of plants. In 1869, Dr. Hooker supplied 400 species of plants from the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew, England. In the upper or southern portion, plants were laid out by geographic areas (Asia, Africa) and divided in the palmetum, fernery, arboretum and the formal garden. Many plants introduced in the island in the late 19th and early 20th centuries were planted here. These included the poinciana, bombay mango, the spathodea, navel orange, and tangerine.
