Inscription.
"Prairie" is the French word for meadow and French explorers used the word to describe the grasslands of the Mississippi Valley. Imagine this prairie sampler of native grasses and wildflowers stretching over 160,000,000 acres from Ohio to the Rocky Mountains.

Today fewer than 4,000,000 acres, or 2.5%, of native North American prairies remain.
• Seventy per cent (70%) of the harvested crops in the historic prairie include cultivated grasses - wheat, rice, corn, etc.; market value is $150,000,000 annually.
• Only small remnants of Ohio's prairies remain and you can find them in old, un-mowed cemeteries; railroad rights-of-way; roadsides; and fencerows.
