1. Roman Period Marker
Inscription. The Romans controlled the region initially through the leadership of Herod the Great, who was born in the Holy Land, converted to Judaism, fled to Rome, and then returned to govern the region. He made a deep impact on the country with his grand structures, all built with expensive imported materials. After his death, the Holy Land was governed by a series of Roman Procurators. Jesus of Nazareth was born in 4 BCE during the rule of Herod. His teachings won him great popularity but also political opposition. In about 30 CE he was condemned to death and crucified by the Roman Procurator, Pontius Pilate, for his refusal to accept the authority of Rome. This was a period of considerable unrest. The first Jewish revolt against Rome began in 66 CE, and Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed in 73 CE. The second Jewish revolt began in 132 CE. The Romans crushed the revolt, expelled the Jews from Jerusalem, and turned the region into a Roman colony.
