East Asia and South Asia
Rice and soybeans, native to Asia, were first domesticated 7,000 to 10,000 years ago in subtropical regions of India, China, and Japan. Today they remain dominant agricultural products and are mainstays of the modern Asian diet.
Pacific and Southeast Asia
Some of the world's most popular and widespread crops—such as sugarcane and taro—are native to this vast region. First cultivated 10,000 years ago, these plants were spread by island and coastal inhabitants to tropical areas all over the world.
Food for thought
Taro, dasheen, cocoyam, elephant ear, eddo, and sato-imo are just a few common names for Colocasia esculenta. First cultivated in New Guinea, today, this tater of the equator is a staple food for more than 100 million people worldwide.
