East Fork State Park in Clermont County, Ohio — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Elk Lick Mound
The Adena people inhabited this area from approximately 800 B.C. to A.D. 100. Their culture is associated with the early Woodland period, and is differentiated from the proceeding Archaic cultures by a variety of innovations and traits; these include the invention of pottery, horticulture, a more sedentary lifestyle, constructing substantial houses, and an extensive burial cult involving mound construction.
The Elk Lick mound has been identified as an Adena mound principally because of its conical shape and location, both typically early Woodland traits. This small burial mound, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, stands as a reminder of a culture that lived in and loved the land we now know as Ohio centuries ago.
