1. A Deadly Force Marker
Inscription. Rich in resources and strategically located, the Great Lakes were a prize sought by three nations in wars from the French and Indian War to the War of 1812, when the Lakes were settled as the boundary between the United States and Canada. Peace, however, did not mean safety. Unpredictable weather, rocky shorelines, large numbers of boats operating in small areas, and human error caused more than 8,000 shipwrecks over 400 years. The shipwrecks on the lake bottoms are a source of intrigue and mystery for underwater archaeologists who seek answers to questions about the region's past.
