Inscription. In 1700, 64 years before the founding of St. Louis, two French priests founded a small settlement near this spot. In 1703, due to hostile natives, the French settlers and their Indian allies fled downstream.  History of Carondelet. This forgotten settlement lies in the Carondelet/Patch neighborhood, but unfortunately very little is known about it. It is briefly told in the history of Carondelet, which was once a village before being annexed by St. Louis in 1870. (Submitted on September 18, 2022, by Jason Voigt of Glen Carbon, Illinois.)
