Inscription. Union General in the Civil War; U.S. District Judge; Postmaster General under President Arthur; Interim U.S. Secretary of Treasury in 1884; U.S. Secretary of State under President Cleveland. Was born in Lanesville in 1832, and lived in Corydon for many years.
 
Erected 1966 by Indiana State Highway Commission. (Marker Number 31.1966.2.)
