Teopanzolco
"En el templo viejo" / "In the old temple"

Teopanzalco
The name of Teopanzolco is recent. At the end of the 19th century, it was known as El Mogote. The inhabitants of the town were called Tlahuicas and they settled at the west of the state of Morelos towards 1200 A.D.

The architecture of Teopanzolco is closely linked to the Mexica buildings style. The distribution of the main buildings and their function is similar to the Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlan. The two temples on the top of the platform represent a Mexica architectural element. This is unique in the whole Morelos

territory.

The group of the buildings dedicated to the cult of the gods is distributed surrounding the great square. Temples and other important buildings rested on the platforms. Now we know that in an earlier occupation phase, the configuration of this area was different and there was not any great square. The gods that were venerated in this place were the same as the Mexica ones: Huizilopochtli, Tlaloc, Tezcatlipoca, and Ehecatl, among others. The people conducted collective human sacrifices. The human remains together with offerings were placed in graves, inside the low platforms.

Teopanzolco lost its importance at the time as the political and religious power of Cuauhnahuac (present day Cuernavaca) was increasing. In 1427, these lands were under the control of the Mexicas of the Triple Alliance (Mexico, Tlacopan, and Texcoco). The inhabitants were required to pay tribute that consisted predominantly of high quantities of blankets made out of cotton.

The buildings that are being conserved and protected were part of the ceremonial center of the Pre-Hispanic settlement. It is very important that all of us protect this site that is now part of our Cultural Heritage and history.

Welcome, enjoy your visit.
