1. Piping Plover Marker
Inscription.
The piping plover was federally listed as threatened in 1986 in its Atlantic Coast breeding range.

Biology
• Piping plovers breed along the New Jersey coast between March 15 and August 31.
• They nest above the high tide line, usually on sandy ocean beaches.
• Soon after hatching, chicks are led by their parents down to the water to feed.
• Chicks learn to fly after 25-35 days.

Threats
• Coastal Development and habitat loss.
• Disturbance of adults and chicks by people and dogs.
• Predators like gulls, crows, foxes, skunks, and cats.
• Vehicles on the beach.

How You Can Help
• Stay out of fenced areas, and respect signs posted on this beach.
• Leave pets at home.
• Don't approach or chase birds - enjoy them from a distance with binoculars.
• Don't leave trash or food on the beach.
• Don't fly kites near fenced areas.
• Support this beach's Management Plan for piping plovers.

To ensure that populations of the Piping Plover continue to prosper on New Jersey coastal beaches, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and local governments are working in partnership to manage and maintain beaches
