Inscription. Ella Sheppard enrolled at Fisk University in the fall of 1868. When she was invited to be an assistant music director just a year later, she became Fisk's first black instructor. "Miss Sheppard" traveled with the Jubilee Singers for eleven years as a soprano, piano accompanist and Assistant Director. Sheppard was one of the four troupe members to participate in all three U.S. and European tours.
