About the Port Side Aircraft Elevator
Three massive elevators moved aircraft between Intrepid's hangar deck and the flight deck above. This was the port side aircraft elevator.

The fast pace of flight operations required high-speed elevators. Intrepid's aircraft elevators traveled between decks in approximately seven seconds.

When the deck-edge elevator was in the down position, it did not leave a hole in the flight deck, as centerline elevators did. This made it easier to carry out flight deck operations.

The large roller doors provided access to the elevator. Crew members closed the doors when the elevator was not in use or the weather was foul.
