The M901 ITV (Improved TOW vehicle) was introduced into service in 1979. This effective tank killer was fitted on the aluminum hulled M113 Armored Personnel Carrier chassis which decreased the operational cost, but provided little protection for the crew. The M901 was deployed to Germany in large numbers to counter the anticipated Soviet armor invasion through the Fulda gap. The fall of the Soviet Union cut the ITV's career short. The emergence of the Bradley fighting vehicle which also carried the TOW missile system and added the more robust 25 mm Bushmaster gun further reduced the need for the ITV. The M901 ITV was used in a limited reconnaissance role during Operation Desert Storm.
