Inscription. Deep into the distant years of prehistory, prairie grasses and flowers covered the rolling hills of this region where bison and elk roamed. Woodland animals and birds made their homes along the forested rivers and streams; eagles and hawks soared overhead. This abundant landscape supported the hunter-gatherer lifestyle of prehistoric peoples who lived here for centuries, and ultimately offered the resources that allowed the development of large villages.
