The trefoil copper cross previously graced the top of the Octagon Building, the original structure of Mount St. Agnes College in Baltimore's Mt. Washington area.
Mount St. Agnes College was founded in 1867 by the Sisters of Mercy, a Catholic order of women religious. On April 8, 1890, the Maryland State Senate granted Mount St. Agnes the charter to confer baccalaureate degrees in the liberal arts.
Mount St. Agnes College continued at the Mt. Washington campus until its merger with Loyola College in 1971, enriching Loyola's curriculum with the addition of undergraduate programs in elementary education, speech pathology, and medical technology.
