Inscription.
Commodore John Barry. . Within these walls lie the mortal remains of Commodore John Barry. Because of his nautical skill, unparalleled seamanship, and length of service to his adopted country, he was proclaimed "The Father of the American Navy" by his contemporaries. Born in County Wexford, Ireland in 1745, this son of a poor farmer distinguished himself, both on land and on sea, as a courageous patriot and naval hero. Volunteering to serve in the new Continental Navy during the American Revolution, Barry won the first victory at sea for the Continental Navy. He assisted General Washington in the crossing of the Delaware, and led a battery of naval artillery at the Battle of Princeton. An active Philadelphia citizen he worked tirelessly for the good of his country, his city, and his compatriots. On February 22, 1797, President Washington personally conferred upon Captain John Barry the rank of Captain with "Commission No. 1" United States Navy. He served as the senior officer of the United States Navy under Presidents Washington, John Adams, and Jefferson until his death in 1803.
