(English translation:)
The Kostverlorenvaart channel was dug in the fifteenth century to improve the drainage of the Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland on 't IJ. Because this created an unwanted open connection with the outside water, the channel was dammed. In order to still allow shipping traffic between Amsterdam and the Haarlemmermeer, an overhaul ('overtoom') was laid. The neighborhood around this became the Overtoomse Buurt.
