Roger Keane (1755-1801) was born in Newry, Northern Ireland on May 17, 1755. At the beginning of the Revolutionary War he was living in Boston and working as a merchant ship captain. His ship Newport was captured by the HMS Experiment on February 16, 1778. Released from captivity in 1799, Keane became a Lieutenant on the Massachusetts Navy ship Charming Sally. Eventually Keane ended up in Philadelphia, where he was commissioned as the captain of the privateer brig Holker on July 26, 1780. During his tenure as captain in the Pennsylvania Privateers, over the next 21 months, Keane participated in the capture of 37 vessels. After the war he continued working commanding coastal merchant vessels. The record also lists that Keane commanded the brig Resolution on a voyage to the Cape of Good Hope and Canton, China.
