Anthony Quervelle (1789-1856) renowned as one of the most of the Empire period in Philadelphia was born in Paris. He immigrated to Philadelphia in 1817, where he married Louise Genevieve Monet at Old St. Joseph's Church. He was first listed as a cabinetmaker in 1820. His furniture warehouse was at 126 South 2nd Street, where the Quervelle family also lived until 1849, when they moved their residence to 71 Lombard Street. He became an award winning furniture maker and was chosen by President Andrew Jackson to design tables for the East Room of the White House in 1829. His shops sold everything from bureaus, sofas, washstands, sideboards, dining room tables, etc. Quervelle Empire furniture is composed of expertly carved mahogany and is marked by various label designs and stencils.
