Roxbury in Boston in Suffolk County, Massachusetts — The American Northeast (New England)
Tiger
Panthera tigris
Habitat: Tigers live in varying habitats throughout Asia. Their regional adaptations are distinct enough for them to be categorized as separate subspecies. In captivity, tigers have been bred without regard for their unique heritage. Over the years, they have been inbred becoming mixtures or hybrids. Accredited zoos are concerned about genetically healthy populations with known parentage that preserve the distinct traits of each subspecies. After all, it would be difficult for a Siberian tiger to survive in the sultry tropics of Sumatra.
Status: Endangered due to habitat loss from logging and development; depletion of prey, poaching and retaliation killing. Approximately 5,000 left in the wild of all the subspecies. Most endangered is the South China tiger with only 20-30 left.
Range: (5 remaining subspecies)
Bengal (P.t. tigris)
Amur or Siberian (P.t. altaica)
Indo-Chinese (P.t. corbetti)
South China (P.t. amoyensis)
Sumatran (P.t. sumatrae)
(3 extinct subspecies)
Caspian (P.t. virgata)
Bali (P.t. balic)
Javan (P.t. sondaica)
