Dr. James H. Ford
Dr. James H. Ford erected 73 W. Canal in 1887. The first floor was his office and the second was a "carriage repository" for F.M. Beck's harness and buggy stock. Dr. Ford held a medical record in Indiana by assisting the births of twelve children of the same mother.

In 1891, misfortune struck when Dr. Ford accidentally trapped his foot in railroad tracks as a train was looming. Though gravely maimed by the passing train, he instructed friends to amputate three inches above the ankle so an artificial limb could be mounted.

New Flour Exchange
On April 14, 1870, fire destroyed fifty-five canal era buildings, counting many of those frame built or wooden shingled on Canal Street. Abstracts show 75 W. Canal constructed in the same 1880's period as the Court House, lit by the famous Charles F. Brush Electrical Arc lamps.

The building's first proprietor was the Hides and Furs Exchange. New Flour Exchange followed, perchance operated by merchandiser Isaac New, a Jewish immigrant born in Germany. His son, Alexander New, gifted the Lincoln Monument to Wabash in 1932.
