1. The Power of Water
Clara and Henry Ford situated their new home along the banks of the Rouge River to take advantage of nature's power and beauty. Construction of a dam and hydroelectric power plant provided the necessary electrical needs for the estate.

2. Thoughtful Design
In 1913, the Fords hired noted Danish-American landscape architect Jens Jensen, who is best known for his "prairie-style" design and use of native plants. Jensen's plans for the riverbank included adding layered limestone to stabilize the banks and simulate natural rock outcrops.

3. Reconstruction of Riverbank
Nearly 100 years later in 2011, a 100-foot section of the riverbank collapsed where the wooden foot-bridge is now restored. Reconstruction of the riverbank involved installing sheet piling hidden beneath large irregular limestone to form multiple terraces, steps and pathways replicating Jensen's design. Native plants were added to reduce storm water runoff from the adjacent lawn and enhance wildlife habitat.

Why can't I go to the dam now? The area surrounding the dam has been closed for safety purposes. Engineering studies and planning are underway for future riverbank restoration efforts below the dam. Across the river, Wayne County
