Lange tijd stonden er twee korenmolens op deze locatie aan de Singel. Daar kwam verandering in toen Henri Camp, architect des Konings, in 1870 het academisch ziekenhuis voor deze plek ontwierp. Toen het ziekenhuis in 1937 verhuisde, kreeg het gebouw met de komst van Museum Volkenkunde een andere functie. Het museum vertelt verhalen over menselijke thema's zoals rouwen, vieren, versieren, bidden en vechten. De hoge totempaal in de tuin no de bezoekers uit de culturele diversiteit van onze wereld te ontdekken. De museumtuin is met zijn vele kunstvoorwerpen een icoon in het Singelpark.
