Destacado científico mexicano y pionero de la fotografía


Nació en 1782 en la Alcaldía Mayor de Cadereyta, egresado del Colegio de Minería, la cual fue la primer escuela secularizada y científica en la Nueva España, con estudios teóricos en matemáticas, física, química y mineralogía.

En su ejercicio profesional en la Sierra Queretana, destacan el descubrimiento de dos minerales, y uno de ellos lleva el nombre de "Herrerita" en su honor; asimismo se dedicó a experimentar con la impresión de fotografias, incluso antes que el francés Louis Daguerre, quien patentó el daguerrotipo; por lo cual obtiene el grado de Doctor en Ciencias. Fue un personaje ocupado en aportar a la sociedad ya que posterior a la epidemia de cólera que azotó la Ciudad de México en 1833, realizó análisis de las cuencas de agua potable que suministraban a la ciudad y apoyó el uso de cañerías de plomo, al ser en aquella época las más higiénicas y seguras.

Fallece el 5 de marzo de 1856 a los 74 años en la Ciudad de México, y sus restos fueron inhumados en el Panteón de San Fernando.

Prominent Mexican scientist and pioneer of photography


Born in 1782 in Cadereyta, he graduated from the College of Mining, which was the first secularized and scientific school in New Spain, with theoretical studies in mathematics, physics, chemistry and mineralogy.

In his professional practice in the Sierra Queretana, the discovery of two minerals stands out, one of them bears the name of "Herrerita" in his honor. He also experimented with printing photographs, even before the Frenchman Louis Daguerre, who patented the daguerreotype. For this effort he obtained the degree of Doctor of Science. He was someone that contributed to society, such as after the cholera epidemic that hit Mexico City in 1833, he made an analysis of the drinking water basins that supplied the city and supported the use of lead pipes, being at that time the most hygienic and safe.

Directorate of Arms of the Mexican Artillery Engineer Corps during the first French Intervention (1838-1839) and during the United States - Mexico War (1846-1848).

He died on March 5, 1856 at the age of 74 in Mexico City, and his remains were buried in the Pantheon of San Fernando.
