Inscription.
The original name of the hotel was the Royal Exchange. The back section of the hotel dates back to 1812 and the front was built between 1835 and 1840.

During the Wm. Lyon Mackenzie Rebellion of 1837, the hotel served as the headquarters for volunteers and for the crew of the 200 ton gunboat, Britomart, which was berthed in Port Dover.

In the basement of the hotel were cells used to imprison American renegades taking part in the Fenian raids of 1866.

H.M.S. Britomart was one of fifteen Britomart Class wooden gunboats completed for the Royal Navy. It served on Lake Erie. These were the last Royal Navy gunboats to have wooden hulls: subsequent gunboats were of composite construction, with wooden planking over iron frames. The class were fitted with a single-cylinder single-expansion reciprocating steam engine. The single screw could be hoisted to give improved performance under sail. The ships were provided with a three-masted barquentine rigging and armed with two 68-pounder smooth bore muzzle loading cannon.

A number of separate incursions by the Fenian Brotherhood into Canada were undertaken to bring pressure on the British government to withdraw from Ireland, although none of these raids achieved their aims.
