Since the founding of St. Louis, people have flocked out of the city to these Meramec River hills. In the late 1700s, folks came for the pure water & mineral springs. In the late 1800s, for resorts & country houses. Since the 1950s, for the leafy suburbs & big parks. The area's been a kind of refuge–a green haven from the industry & business that sustain the St. Louis region but also make much of the metropolis less socially & environmentally peaceful.
