1. The Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch House Marker
Inscription. Built around 1860, this ranch house served as home to descendants of the Bernal family for 120 years. Rufina Bernal (Granddaughter of Rancho Santa Teresa founder Jose Joaquin Bernal) and Carlos Gulnac married and raised their family here. Their daughter Susan married Patrick F. Joice in 1894, and the Joice’s continued to operate their family cattle business at this ranch until 1980.

Originally built with four rooms and no electricity or indoor plumbing, the house was added to and remodeled many times to accommodate growing families and advances in technology. By 1950, it was three times its original size and supplied with power and water. Today you see the ranch house as it looked in the early 1900s.

If you were a ten year old on this ranch in 1900, your chores would be…..
✓ Beat rugs a sweep floors
✓ Carry wood for wood stove
✓ Haul water from the spring to take baths, wash dishes, do laundry
✓ Wash dishes by hand (in the tub)
✓ Empty chamber pots
