Santa Teresa in San Jose in Santa Clara County, California — The American West (Pacific Coastal)
The Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch House
Home to a ranching family for 120 years
Originally built with four rooms and no electricity or indoor plumbing, the house was added to and remodeled many times to accommodate growing families and advances in technology. By 1950, it was three times its original size and supplied with power and water. Today you see the ranch house as it looked in the early 1900s.
If you were a ten year old on this ranch in 1900, your chores would be…..
✓ Beat rugs a sweep floors
✓ Carry wood for wood stove
✓ Haul water from the spring to take baths, wash dishes, do laundry
✓ Wash dishes by hand (in the tub)
✓ Empty chamber pots
