Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, Missouri — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Strassenfest German Garden
This garden incorporates native flora of Germany and central Europe, as well as plants hybridized or discovered by German botanists. The plants highlight central European species such as the common boxwood, pontic azaeleas, and linden trees, including the Tilia tomentosa which lines the famous Unter den Linden Boulevard in Berlin, Germany.
The informal woodland setting is intentional. Perennial plants of the same species were scattered throughout the garden in places where they would thrive. This planting method gives this display a natural appearance, unlike other more formal gardens you'll see today.
The bronze bust is of Dr. George Engelmann, a German physician who immigrated to St. Louis in the 1830s. This noted botanist and principal advisor to Garden founder Henry Shaw instilled a strong scientific mission for the Garden, laying the foundation for the Garden's world-renowned research program.
Dedicated in 2000, this garden was funded by a charitable donation from the St. Louis Strassenfest Corporation.
Erected by Missouri Botanical Garden.
