Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, Missouri — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
St. Louis Herb Society Herb Garden
This garden is dedicated to some of the oldest friends of humanity: herbs. Herbs have historically been valued for their fragrance, utility, medicinal properties, and culinary use.
Thanks to the generous support of the St. Louis Herb Society, the garden was installed in 1963 and renovated in 2003. The design is inspired by the complex yet symmetrical Victorian-era style, which was meant to make gardens places of serenity and contemplation. Its quaint courtyard is divided into geometric and orderly quadrants focused on historical uses of these plants. There are as many as 350 varieties of herbs in this small, 90-by-56-foot garden, most of which are grown in the Garden's greenhouses.
Did you know? The St. Louis Herb Society was the first volunteer organization given access to work in the Garden. Today, members of the Herb Society plant approximately 1,200 plants each year. They work to display many varieties, allowing visitors to see how specific herbs grow in this area.
