Inscription.
John Hunter was a noted patriarch of the Chiniki band of the Stoney Tribe in Morley, Alberta. He was recognized for his business and ranching acumen and among other tributes, was commemorated by the Calgary Stampede Board in 1951.

1. Sitting Eagle.
Sitting Eagle, also known as John Hunter, was the chief of the Stoney Nakoda First Nation of Alberta, located in the town of Morley which is home to the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley bands of Nakoda. Chief Sitting Eagle was born in 1874 and became heavily involved in the Calgary Stampede, over the years coming to be considered a symbol of the event himself. He died in 1970. In 1988, an 11-foot statue of Chief Sitting Eagle was unveiled in downtown Calgary, where it stands to this day.

2. Sitting Eagle Sculpture
well as his ranching and leadership abilities, Sitting Eagle was also well known as an artist and craftsman, in particular for his tipi designing and painting. He married a Stoney woman named Leah Rider, taught Sunday School classes on the Stoney Reserve, and was a singer with the Chiniki Dancers.
