- Walt Whitman

Born: May 31, 1819
Died: March 26, 1892
Lived in: Camden, New Jersey
Inducted to New Jersey Hall of Fame: 2009

Considered the most influential poet in U.S. History, Walt Whitman was primarily self-educated. A printer by trade, Whitman later moved on to career stints as a teacher, journalist, editor, and newspaper founder before pursuing poetry. In 1855, Whitman self-published his collection of 12 poems, Leaves of Grass. Over many years and several editions, it expanded to include more than 300 poems, in-part due to Whitman's experiences working in Washington, D.C. hospitals during the Civil War. After holding positions in the Department of the Interior and the Attorney General's office, Whitman suffered a stroke which led him to move to Camden. There, he spent his final two decades working on additions and revisions to his deathbed edition of Leaves of Grass and preparing his last volume of poems and prose, Good-Bye My Fancy.
