This battery of four 24 pounders went into action here about 9:00 a.m., April 6, 1863, holding this position until about 11:00 a.m., when it retired along the Corinth Road, leaving one gun. The battery had 1 officer and 3 men wounded.

5. Muzzle of 24-pdr Field Howitzer Model 1841
One of the pieces happens to be registry number 1 (seen at the bottom of the muzzle). It was inspected by William Maynadier (W.M.) in 1841 after being cast by Cyrus Alger of Boston, Massachusetts. The howitzer weighed 1,323 pounds.

6. 24-pdr Field Howitzer Model 1841
The other howitzer beside the monument is registry number 2, also cast in 1841 by Cyrus Alger, and inspected by William Maynadier. Note the "handles" over the trunnions, and the recessed area near the breech. These features are seen on most heavy field howitzers.
